Hearing Hildegard: Bridges Between Medieval Chant and World Music

While much work has been done regarding the musicological and paleographic interpretation of
Hildegard’s compositions, fewer have considered what the voices singing the music might have
actually sounded like, and many assumptions about the performance of medieval chant reflect the
practices of 19th-20th century European chant revival movements more than historical traditions.
This workshop explores communal singing traditions from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North
America and what we can learn from them in our approach to singing Hildegard’s music, with
multimedia examples as well as opportunities for participants to sing together.

This workshop will be held in English
